Kells, County Kilkenny

Kells, medieval capital of Kilkenny is now a small village of great natural beauty. Near to the 12th century Augustinian priory is Mullins Mill which has had a working mill on this site since 1170.

It ceased production in 1965 when the last of the Mullins family died.

Since restored and now a mill museum, it is sited on the King's River, so named for the High King Caille who was drowned in the river in 844 in the middle of a battle with the Danes when he tried to save a servant who was being swept away.
