Situated on the tip of the eastern side of the river Suir Estuary, Hook Lighthouse is one of the oldest operational Lighthouses in the world. It has served sailors and shipping for over 800 years. The tower was first built in the 13th Century and the majority of the ancient structure remains intact. On the opposite side of the river estuary lies the village of Crook leading to the expression "by Hook or by Crook" - meaning to reach Waterford by channels either side of the estuary. The lighthouse is now fully automated and was opened to the public in 1996, becoming one of Ireland's top tourist attractions.
